Indian Mango Memories UK | Summer Nostalgia & Where to Buy
In the realm of Hindu mythology, where wisdom often comes in unexpected packages, there’s a delightful tale featuring the beloved young Ganesha (Bala Ganapathi). Picture him, with his endearing elephant head, holding a sugarcane, a sweet, a branch, and a very special fruit – a divine mango known as Jnana palam, the fruit of knowledge.
One day, as Ganesha was at home with his swift older brother Kartikeya, who always seemed to be in motion on his magnificent peacock, and their divine parents, Shiva and Parvati, the wandering sage Narada paid them a visit. Narada, known for his wisdom but also his knack for stirring things up, presented a single, beautiful mango to Shiva. Shiva, in his love, offered it to Parvati, who in turn, seeing the eager eyes of her sons, wished for them to share the precious fruit.
But Narada, with a twinkle in his eye, declared that the Jnana palam could not be divided. This set the stage for a contest: a race around the world three times, the undivided mango as the prize. Kartikeya, confident in his speed, immediately zoomed off on his peacock, a blur of vibrant feathers against the sky.
Little Ganesha, however, with his seemingly small legs, knew he couldn’t compete in a footrace against his swift brother. Instead, he thoughtfully circled his parents, Shiva and Parvati, three times with deep reverence. When Kartikeya returned, expecting victory, he was bewildered to find Ganesha holding the radiant mango.
“But how?” Kartikeya exclaimed.
His loving mother, Parvati, smiled. “My dear Kartikeya,” she explained, “for Ganesha, his entire world resides within us, his parents. By lovingly circumambulating us, he completed his world’s journey.” This charming story beautifully illustrates that true wisdom isn’t always about speed or outward action, but often about understanding deeper connections and values, like the importance of family.
🥭 Sweet Summer Memories: Mango Magic in India & the UK 🥭
Just as this ancient tale holds a special place in Indian culture, so too does the arrival of mango season. For many who grew up in India, summer wasn’t just about scorching heat; it was synonymous with the sweet, intoxicating aroma of ripening mangoes. 🥭
Childhood memories are often painted with the vibrant hues of different mango varieties. You’d see families eagerly awaiting the first harvest, from the trees perhaps growing right in their backyard. The excitement of plucking that first perfectly ripe Langra or Alphonso was unparalleled! 🏡 The air would be thick with their sugary scent.
Then there were the trips to the bustling market or the familiar call of the fruit vendor pushing his cart down the street. Every household, rich or poor, would make it a point to bring home a stash. The sheer variety was astounding – the sweet, saffron-colored Kesar, the slightly tangy Dasheri, fibreless Banginapally mangoes , the unique flavour of the Alphonsa. 🥭🥭🥭 Each variety had its own dedicated fan following.
Summer afternoons were often spent with sticky fingers and happy smiles, everyone gathered around a pile of freshly cut mangoes. Sharing slices with family and friends was an unspoken ritual. The juice would drip down your chin, a badge of summer joy! 😄
Even now, living in the UK, that craving for the taste of a ripe Indian mango never truly fades. Spice Supermarket Ltd. understands this connection to home.
