This spicy red chutney is a delicious and essential accompaniment to South Indian breakfast dishes like idli and dosai.
Ingredients:
- 10-12 dried long red chillies (Chakra Long Red Chillies), soaked in warm water for 30 minutes
- 1 cup grated coconut
- 1/2 cup roasted chana dal (split chickpeas)
- 4-5 cloves of garlic
- 1-inch piece of ginger, chopped
- 1 teaspoon tamarind paste (or 1 small ball of tamarind soaked in 1/4 cup water)
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon urad dal (split black gram)
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- Curry leaves (optional)
Instructions:
- Grind the Chutney: In a blender, combine the soaked red chillies, coconut, roasted chana dal, garlic, ginger, tamarind paste (or soaked tamarind water), and salt. Grind to a smooth paste, adding water as needed.
- Temper the Chutney: Heat oil in a small pan. Add mustard seeds and urad dal. When the mustard seeds splutter, add asafoetida and curry leaves (if using).
- Combine: Pour the tempering over the ground chutney and mix well.
